ABOUT FISHING WITH SPOONS

Fishing With Spoons (named after a Calvin and Hobbes comicstrip) played their first show at Evanston's vineyard in the Spring of 2003. Vocalist/Guitarist Alex, lead guitarist Noam, and bassist Pat were 13 then, and drummer Tim was just 12. They performed raucous covers of Suite Pee by System Of A Down and Enter Sandman by Metallica, and they played them shaky-voiced and kind of awkward...

But even in all their pubescent clumsiness, Tim drummed with a ferocity and command over his domain the likes of which Evanston had never seen in a 12 year old boy; still, Alex sang and played with a wild-eyed hunger for hard-rocking noise, and a loud, unapologetic yearning to be as big as all of his heroes; Pat was so focused on his throbbing bass-riffs that he hadn't even become the muscley hulk of a man he is now; and Noam, with no remorse, but always a smile, left all of the audience with jaws dropped as he soloed on his guitar. Mainly, the band was tight--- intuitive and dynamic. There was a closeness between these four boys that 13 year-olds could only gain through years of preschool playdates and sleepaway camp together. That was 6 years ago.

Since then they've taken it easy on the Metallica, and brushed up on their songwriting skills. They've gotten a bit more experience around town, and really honed in on their musical roots and tastes, playing rock-infused covers of Nina Simone's "Tell Me More..." at Metro Chicago, and Portishead's "Glory Box" at Reggie's Rock Club, and releasing a new EP under Lauren and Jeff McClusky's label, McFest Music. When it comes down to it, Fishing With Spoons is what you get when you take four unruly adolescents who grew up on Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Local H, and System of a Down, give them their own instruments, some Jeff Buckley, Primus, Coltrane, Beatles, and Zappa CDs, and let their rage stew for several years. Together since they were 11, Alex, Noam, Pat, and Tim are now rocking all of Chicago with their unique brand of rock and roll, and they're rocking pretty damn hard.

What Chicago is saying...
"dynamic in the right places, with riffs that rip and pull left and right"
-Jason Petros, Chicagos Independant Music Review
