Back to the list

What's missing from terrestrial radio these days?  The list is quite long, depending on who you talk to, though one complaint is a lack of song identification.  Deejays sometimes back-announce, though most of the time, it's guesswork for interested fans.

And that means missed sales and lost awareness opportunities for bands, at least on traditional formats.  But step into newer delivery formats like satellite and digital (HD) radio, and identification becomes an integral part of the listening experience.

On the ground, terrestrial streams are going digital, and that means more stations and IDs.  But HD radio offers some other interesting possibilities, including iTunes tagging.  Listen to a song on the radio, tag it onto an iPod, and download it later.  In April, Clear Channel Radio rolled the concept into 340 of its frontline, HD stations.

But secondary, HD2 channels, which transmit across the same frequency, were only added recently.  In total, iTunes tagging is now available across nearly 700 digital channels, according to Clear Channel, though a specialized receiver is required to tag.
