Retro Gets Real: EMI Jumps Into Vinyl Reissues Think that vinyl is just a passing, retro fad? Perhaps, though EMI Music is hoping to cash in on a possible growth trend. On Tuesday, the major unveiled a vinyl-focused re-release program, one that kicks off in August. The reissue series, called "From the Capitol Vaults," initially resurrects eight out-of-print titles. The re-releases come mostly from Radiohead, a group that recently exited its Capitol relationship. Other reissues come from Coldplay, A Perfect Circle, and Steve Miller Band. The move makes sense given broader format gains, though absolute sales figures remain modest. According to EMI, vinyl sales increased 80 percent during the past year. A separate, US-based shipment report by the RIAA showed a 36.6 percent gain in 2007, to 1.3 million units. On a more micro level, meaningful gains are being felt by smaller retailers. Just recently, Boston-based Newbury Comics pointed to monthly vinyl revenues pushing past $100,000, and other brick-and-mortar retailers have shared similar stories.
