Back to the list

Heard it on MTV?  The somewhat worn-out criticism of MTV is that the channel never plays music, a claim that puts network executives on the defensive.  But instead of one mainline, video-focused channel, MTV Networks executives frequently point to an array of more music-intensive channels, including MTV2.

But the network also includes and introduces a large amount of music within its drama-heavy shows, including "The Hills".  Now, MTV is chronicling its on-air playlists on SoundTrack (soundtrack.mtv.com), a list of everything played across the network.

On the destination - currently an alpha, developing project - visitors can receive 30-second samples, and click through to artist profile pages.  Artists and fans can create and add content to their profiles, and visitors can rate content.  That forms the basis for music discovery and recommendation, though the broader strategy currently appears loose.
