MIT Music Brain Unleashed...

What are the ingredients of a perfect music recommendation?  That is the billion-dollar question vexing the digital music industry right now, though a few entrants have already gained traction.  That includes Last.FM, purchased for $280 million by CBS Corp.  Or, Pandora, now a favorite among iPhone-carrying music fans.  The space also includes MusicIP, MyStrands, The Filter, and MediaUnbound, part of a highly-competitive arena.

Who else?  Also bubbling is the EchoNest, a recommendation startup founded by MIT Media Lab PhDs Brian Whitman and Tristan Jehan.  Columbia University and UC Berkeley researchers also contributed to the EchoNest algorithm, a steep academic pedigree.  Under the hood, the company not only listens to music on the web, it also reads about music and monitors music trends.  That "Music Brain" is now being offered to third-party developers, an outreach that begins at developer.echonest.com.

The portability play is designed to accentuate any music site, especially those aiming to spruce existing catalogs.  "Because so much music content is available on so many sites, content today is becoming more of a commodity and what sets sites apart is the consumer experience" said Jim Lucchese, chief executive of the Echo Nest.
